:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- A must read for all horror fans : I don't believe the enthusiasm that Lovecraft shares with many of the authors that he mentions within this essay will translate to a modern audience, but the work itself is worth reading for its historical look at the evolution of the genre of "weird fiction" . The stories and authors that Lovecraft explores offer an autobiographical look into his own growth as a writer (for better or worse) and he seems to have no real disdain for any of them, noting their respective strengths and weaknesses. He lays out what makes for a good piece of weird fiction and how they can be sabotaged by certain elements, namely to over explain the origins of the "cosmic horror" the stories attempt to convey upon the readers. He acknowledges many authors as being at the root of what would become weird fiction, beginning with the gothic romanticism of Mary Shelley, Ann Radcliffe, and Emily Bronte. The book is a relatively quick read and should take no better than a few hours. Even though the stories mentioned may be considered quaint, old fashioned, and probably dull there are still gems to be found, especially the M. R. James story The Casting of the Ruins which is not mentioned in the essay. For fans of horror or Lovecraft this is a must read. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2020 )

Lovecraft on the state of supernatural horror in literature. He gives his insights and traces the history and most importantly, gives examples of noted author's and works in different eras and on different continents. If you enjoy gothic horror, your favourites are here and a number of others you may not be acquainted with, along with the titles for you to look up. Summaries of some tales are given as well. Although a bit wordy it was enlightening. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audiobook version. The audiobook was narrated by two members of the excellent H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society, Sean Branney and Andrew Leman. Anything produced by the Society is worth your time. Their love for the material and exceptional audio productions will bring hours of audio delight. Be sure to pick up all the episodes of their Dark Adventure Radio Theater. These are radio dramas set in the 30s that portray dramatizations of Lovecraft's stories. They are superb, just like this reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2020 )

In particular it reveals Lovecraft as far more well read in fields outside of literature than one might expect. This essay could be read with profit by students of comparative literature as well, perhaps, as students of history. One wonders if James S.A. Corey is/are fans of Lovecraft! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from TheRaccoonMan -- Brilliant Book! A Must Have for Horror Enthusiasts! : My original copy had a long introduction by a literary critic whose name escapes me. One of his primary points was that this is a review of horror in literature by one of the 20th century’s greatest writers of the genre. He also pointed out that Lovecraft had written it as a favor for a friend, for free! Finally, he pointed out that Lovecraft had the gift of summarizing other writers’ works while conveying what makes the story work-Lovecraft’s summaries convey the sense of fear that the writers conveyed. If nothing else, this is a brilliant reading list for anyone interested in following the development of the supernatural element in European literature. To be sure, Lovecraft’s innate racism, unfortunately common in his time, causes him to largely ignore writings from other cultures. However, given the circumstances of the work, that limitation probably prevents the subject from becoming impossible to handle. This work is a must for any student of European fiction and a real gift for the student of literary criticism. And it is also a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to know what is available out there. This work lead me to MR James, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen...Thanks, Lovecraft!
